Top 5 Big Apple Day Trips for Residents of The Lofts Pier Village Condos

Spring is a great time to go out and explore – and with NYC so close by, residents of Pier Village certainly have a wealth of options to choose from when it comes to a day trip. The Lofts Pier Village is conveniently located at a distance of just over 55 miles from NYC, with various means of transport available – including ferries and transit.

So today, let’s look at some of the best activities and day trips available around the NYC area. This list has something for everyone, with all options being fairly close to The Lofts Pier Village condos.

  1. Birdwatching around NYC

Spring is the perfect time to go out birdwatching.  Though we’ve had a few teases back-and-forth with snow and sunshine, it won’t be long before the weather is reliable enough for a birdwatching outing. The outdoors is glorious, the weather is mild and pleasant, and the birds are out and singing. For those of you interested in birdwatching or hiking, there are some great places for it in NYC.

Prospect Park (Brooklyn) and Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge (Far Rockaway) are two great options. Prospect Park is 56.6 miles away from Pier Village, while JBWR is a little further away at 68.8 miles. Watchers have so far reported seeing a total of 298 bird species in Prospect Park alone! The park also has squirrels, butterflies, and other exciting wildlife. A must-visit spot that might become a recurring favorite.

Looking for something a bit closer to home? Wolfes Pond Park Trail and Staten Island Greenbelt White Trail are both on Staten Island. Wolfes Pond Park is just over 36 miles from The Lofts Pier Village condos, so you should be able to get there in an hour or so, even with some traffic. The trail is lovely – the park’s a wildlife haven, so you’re sure to see plenty of beautiful little birds.

When going birdwatching, always make sure you carry a good pair of binoculars and your phone. You’ll need it for taking pictures, recording calls, and for looking up unknown birds. We would also suggest downloading a bird ID app. It’s always more fun birdwatching when you know which birds you’re looking at.

Birdwatching with your kids is a great way to get out into the sunshine and bond over a new hobby. Teach them beforehand to practice being quiet and still. Lastly, try not to wear bright colored clothes, because those might scare birds away.

  1. Museums and zoos in NYC

Museums are a fantastic idea for day trips – and NYC has its fair share of them! Some of our favorites include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Frick Collection, the Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of the City of New York, Museum of Modern Art, the High Line and Whitney Museum, and the Lower East Side Tenement Museum.

You may also like the American Museum of Natural History (about nature, human history, and marine life). Their entrance is a pay-what-you-can structure, based on what you’d like to donate. It’s a fun place, and if you’re going with kids, it’s one of the more fun options to consider. The Bronx Zoo is another place that falls under a similar category.

The Bronx Zoo is popular with kids, and fun for adults as well. With rides, activities (nature treks, feeding penguins, meeting wild animals), a separate children’s zoo, a breathtaking butterfly garden, and a great big list of resident creatures – it’s not very hard to see why it’s such an attraction! The zoo has many seasonal activities and rides and is conveniently located just 68.5 miles from The Lofts Pier Village condos.

  1. Popular tourist spots in NYC.

Tourists’ favorite spots are popular for a reason, so if you haven’t seen them already, we’d recommend visiting them at least once. Some of our favorites are Battery Park, Wall Street, Trinity Church, Brooklyn Bridge, and the Empire State Building. The view from the top is stunning – although perhaps not so much for people with a fear of heights!

The Lofts Pier Village condos aren’t very far from NYC, so with some clever planning, you can hit a few different tourist spots with each visit. Tourist spots can be hectic and visiting multiple places in quick succession might give you too little time to watch and absorb. We’d recommend visiting a maximum of 5 tourist spots in a day. The good news is that with New York City being what it is, at this pace you’ll never run out of places to visit on the weekend.

If you like to pack a little more into your trip, you can visit Rockefeller Center, Central Park, Times Square, and perhaps a Broadway Show.

Want to sit somewhere and relax for a while? How about watching a recording of one of your favorite TV shows? From Saturday Night Live to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, many TV shows give out free tickets on their website. Just book well in advance, and you’re all set! #Exciting!

  1. Madame Tussauds in New York.

Madame Tussauds Wax Museum deserves a point of its own because it’s truly incredible. Take a look at the wax figures of your favorite celebrities and icons. The place is open seven days a week – from 9 AM to 10 PM on most days, and from 9 AM to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. It’s located on 42nd Street, which is close to some really great restaurants and other fun activities.

Madame Tussauds NYC is roughly 58 miles from The Lofts Pier Village, so not very far at all! Kids love the place. On average, a tour through Madame Tussauds takes anything between 1-2 hours. Roam around, spot figures of your faves, pose with them and click away happily. The entrance fee starts at approximately $30 (tickets can be bought on their website).

Some of their incredible wax figures include those of Sofia Vergara, Johnny Depp, Kylie Jenner, Albert Einstein, Marilyn Monroe, Barack Obama, Jimmy Fallon, Queen Elizabeth, and, most importantly, Taylor Swift. They also offer fun adventures, gaming experiences, and the chance to make a souvenir wax hand yourself. If you haven’t visited them yet, we heartily recommend it!

  1. Shopping in NYC.

What’s the perfect way to conclude a day trip? With some good old retail therapy, of course! Splurge on clothes and accessories, buy some great books, and window shop and have fun at some of the best malls in New York City. You’ll have something with which to remember the trip, and if you’ve brought your kids with you, they’ll be happy too!

The Shops at Columbus Circle, Westfield World Trade Center, and Manhattan Mall are some of our favorite places for shopping – they’re all within 59 miles of The Lofts Pier Village condos, and they’re great for the shopping experience – whether it’s window shopping, eating, buying anything from cosmetics to gifts or electronics, or even watching a movie. There are lots of great movie theaters nearby, such as AMC Lincoln Square 13, AMC Empire 25, Regal Union Square Stadium 14, and others.

If you head further into NYC, you’ll have numerous other options – from malls to bookstores like Rizzoli Bookstore or the Strand Book Store. If you’re visiting with kids, you can try out some arcades. Manhattan has some great ones that are close to the malls – the Modern Pinball NYC Arcade, Chinatown Fair Family Fun Center, and Two-Bit’s Retro Arcade, for example.
